The first time I met Eric, he gave me a trainload of shit. The second time I met him, he offered to give a guitar stand. The third, he taught me how to play a few chords of Jane Said.

He always gave me shit and I gave it right back... our way of expressing acceptance, I guess. The year he won the Northern Contest, we fished with John and gave our poor guide shit, tag-team style. The motor wouldn't start and Eric and I just sat there and chuckled as John ranted and raved. You were probably really pissed, John, but once Eric starting snickering, cigarette clenched tightly in his lips, "God, Dude... Relax..." I could't hold back.

We took a trip into Battle Lake, just Eric and I, for more eggs one morning and he talked about how everything was good, how he was happy. Like A Rock by Seger came on. Neither one of us had heard it in a long time, just in the Chevy commercial. We sang it and felt like we were somebody.

"I was eighteen
Didn't have a care
Working for peanuts
Not a dime to spare
But I was lean and
Solid everywhere
Like a rock

My hands were steady
My eyes were clear and bright
My walk had purpose
My steps were quick and light
And I held firmly
To what I felt was right
Like a rock

Like a rock, I was strong as I could be
Like a rock, nothin' ever got to me
Like a rock, I was something to see
Like a rock"

Things were good and he was happy, looking to the future.

We're carrying on, Eric. Giving each other shit, especially to Johnny, like I told you I would.

"And sometimes late at night
When I'm bathed in the firelight
The moon comes callin' a ghostly white
And I recall
I recall."

We recall you, Eric. And we all call each other Brother and through all of the shit, late at night, in the campfire light, you will hear, I love you, man and we'll raise our glasses to you, Brother. We love you, man.

I met John up at the Ground Round one night after I had moved up to Duluth in 1999. A few beers latter Eric joined us. I didn't know Eric very well at this point other than he was John's brother. After talking awhile, Eric found out that I still travled to work in the Twin Cities 2-3 days a week. Hi first comment, "I have a house and a spare bed, you can crash at my place if you would like". I have lifelong buddys that would of not said that.
I say hello every time I drive to Johnny's with a honk of the horn. You are still, and will always be in our hearts buddy!

I just got my invite for the Memorial... walleyes beware. Spring is upon us. Dew, is the ice completely out? Make sure John and Uwe come up there and do all the hard work before the Memorial so I can just sit on my rusty dusty, guzzle beer, and lip off... for a change.

Maybe we need a special shirt for Conley... Fellas?
